Requirements & Eligibility

AlbuquerqueAt the present time, no states issue Phlebotomy licenses. However, four states do require a technician to seek certification in this field in order to work as a Phlebotomy Technician: Louisiana, Nevada, California and Washington. A capable Phlebotomist must possess the ability to read and write in order to read test requests from physicians or diagnostic labs. These technicians also must meet health and safety rules established by medical facilities. Although formal eligibility requirements do not exist for this occupation, as a practical matter most employers will only hire Phlebotomists who have sought certifications to demonstrate competency drawing blood. Typically, a learner who has taken classes and received a certificate in Phlebotomy will then sit for an examination from a recognized independent certifying organization to become a fully Certified Phlebotomist.

Application Process & Costs

Since no state issues a license for Phlebotomy, few institutions offer formal degree programs in this subject. Technicians in this field sometimes hold degrees in unrelated subjects. Most colleges and schools accepting students into fast Phlebotomy training require at least a high school diploma or GED, however. Prices can range from slightly under $1,000 for a quick Phlebotomy course to $4,000 or more for courses in this subject that include extensive preparation or several semesters.

Online Programs

Many students in Albuquerque attend formal long term medical programs in nursing or medicine that also offer experience collecting blood samples from patients. Quite a number of people who plan on entering the Phlebotomy field seek certificates in Phlebotomy through briefer study in a program offered by a college or vocational school. Some locally accessible educational institutions that teach students how to draw blood as part of the curriculum include these resources:

University of New Mexico, 1634 University Boulevard NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102;
Central New Mexico Community College, 525 Buena Vista Drive SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106;
Santa Fe Community College, 6401 Richards Avenue, Santa Fe, NM 87508

Maintaining Certification/License & Renewal

Several recognized bodies offer credentials in Phlebotomy. Some require Phlebotomists to re-certify at regular intervals by passing examinations to establish their proficiency. Others mandate ongoing continuing education.

Salary & Job Prospects

Phlebotomists receive an average annual salary of $31,890. They typically earn hourly compensation in the United States ranging between a low of $10.65 and $21.06. Job prospects in the field appear outstanding, due to the aging of the large Baby Boomer demographic. By 2020, the United States Department of Labor predicts that many additional Phlebotomists will find employment as a result of the need to collect blood samples from a growing senior population under medical care. Phlebotomists sometimes work part-time, or during weekend or night shifts. Taking a Phlebotomy class may launch a student on a path towards a very rewarding career.

Requirements and Eligibility

58There are three types of phlebotomists: the limited technician, technician I, and technician II. Every phlebotomist must have a high school diploma or a GED.

A limited phlebotomy technician must have 20 hours of classroom training and do 25 supervised skin punctures. A phlebotomy technician I must do a minimum of 40 hours of class room training. As you do your minimum 40 hours of clinical experience, you must do at least 10 skin punctures, and at least 50 venipunctures – both of which will be supervised.

Requirements for becoming a phlebotomy technician II are a combination of having certification to practice as a phlebotomy technician I, and of doing specific training. In particular, you must have a written letter that states you have done 20 arterial punctures (IE, drawing blood from an artery). The letter must be written by a licensed practitioner.

Application and Cost

Depending on where you go, the cost could be higher or lower than in other cities.

The Because We Care school is a good place to start. This is a non-profit organization, and their phlebotomy course covers the circulatory system, ethics, safety, skill training, and more. It is expected that you have had some medical experience before you go to their courses.

The Technical Learning Centers is another place you can go to find phlebotomy training. This one requires that you be 18 years old, at least, and have a high school diploma or GED. You will receive 170 hours of externship and 560 hours of training in the classroom. This gives you a total of 730 hours in total. The entire program is worth 29.4 credit hours.

Online Programs

One online program you can try is Phlebotomy Services. This course is $899, and has a $50 late fee if you register less than three weeks before the classes start. The company also takes into consideration that companies may have their employees taking this course, and if so, will take $50 off the registration cost after three people have signed up.

This course has three days. The first two are online, while the third is completed in person at a location specified on their website a day or two before. If you do not complete the online instruction, you will not be allowed to participate on the third day.

Maintaining and Renewing Your License

When you go to renew your license, you must make sure that you have paid your renewal fee. In addition, you must have had six hours of continued education classes every two years – or three hours every year.

Maintaining your license includes a few more things. Everyone must show their certification in a visible place in their office or their person. You will also be documented for competency. For limited technicians, and phlebotomy technician Is, you will be supervised monthly for a skin puncture review.

Salary and Jobs

If you live closer to Virginia in DC, you might make an average of $28,743. In Maryland, you may make $31,974. Either way, a phlebotomist earns an average of $21,000 upon entry and can earn up to $43,000 or more on the highest end of the scale. Location, job, and employer make up what you are made.

If it’s more expensive to live in your area, your job will pay more. If your employer pays more than another, you’ll earn more. It’s simple mathematics, really.

A phlebotomy job, however, requires clean writing and neatness. This is because you will be mainly drawing blood, labeling, and storing the samples. It may seem counter-intuitive, but do not take hits from your doctor about handwriting.

Requirements & Eligibility

57The state of Virginia does not license or certify phlebotomy technicians. Thus requirements and expectations are driven by educational institutions and employers. However, to take the national certification examination or to enter a college program, a high school diploma or GED is required. At a minimum, expect to supply proof of immunizations, documentation of a negative tuberculosis skin test and of a physician’s examination, usually within the previous 12 months prior to admission. Drug screens and criminal background checks are usually required. Some programs may have educational prerequisites like medical terminology. You will probably also need to be at least 18 years of age when the course commences.

Application Process & Costs

Each educational institution has its own application process; contact the institution of your choice for details. Some may offer the opportunity to complete the application process entirely online. If training positions are limited, you may need to complete an interview as part of the application process. Costs also vary by institution. At the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center of Norfolk State University, the cost is $1,150, although books are not included. At Tidewater Community College, in-state tuition is $172.35 per credit, for overall cost of $2,068.20. This does not include textbooks or supplies, and there is an additional fee for a criminal background check. You are also expected to furnish your own lab coat. At East Coast Polytechnic Institute University, part-time students pay less. As long as you take fewer than 12 credit hours per semester, the cost is approximately $444 per credit hour, for a per class cost of approximately $1,300 to $1,800.

Online Programs

Some programs may offer all or part of the theory portion online; check with the institution. You must complete a hands-on clinical component, however, and this portion of the program must be under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Look for a program that offers adequate — at least 40 hours, and preferably more — of clinical training, to assure you have the necessary technical competence to perform venipunctures and other clinical skills.

Maintaining Certification/License & Renewal

Virginia does not require that phlebotomy technicians be licensed or certified. Employers, however, may prefer or require national certification. National certification offers assurance that an applicant meets minimum standards of competency and knowledge. To become nationally certified, you must have a high school diploma or GED, complete an accredited phlebotomy course, pay a fee and pass a written exam. National certification is available from a variety of organizations; the tests and recertification requirements, as well as the length of certification, vary by organization. To recertify you must usually either complete continuing education credits or retake the exam.

Salary & Job Prospects

The nationwide hourly average wage for phlebotomists was $15.03 in 2014, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. In Virginia, the average hourly wage is slightly lower, at $15.28. The hourly wage in Virginia Beach was $15.03, with an annual salary range between $21,870 and $39,130. Demand for phlebotomists is expected to remain high for the foreseeable future. The BLS reports a projected growth rate of 27 percent though 2022, almost three times the growth rate projected for all occupations.

Phlebotomy Careers

While phlebotomists may work in a variety of clinical settings, their primary task is to draw blood for use in diagnostic testing. Phlebotomists may work in hospitals, in testing centers and in relief organizations like the American Red Cross. Phlebotomists prepare vials for the blood draw, find veins and perform the actual blood draw. They also label vials, store blood and send them to the correct clinics for analysis. In addition, phlebotomists are required to understand insurance and other medical terminology in order to ensure that all samples are routed to the right place and claims are submitted for payment.

Requirements and Eligibility

A certificate or degree in phlebotomy is also required and technicians are required to undergo regular re-certification. People currently working in the medical field who want to break into phlebotomy may be able to take fewer courses and substitute work experience for some coursework. Phlebotomy programs are offered at community colleges, specialty training centers and at vocational schools. Most programs require approximately one year of study for completion.

While each employer has its own requirements, there are some that are universal to the profession. You will be working with confidential patient information and sensitive data, so you will be required to pass a background check as a condition of hire. You will also be required to submit proof of immunization and be tested for communicable diseases like tuberculosis. Some companies may also require you to be fingerprinted before starting work.

Application Process and Costs

Breaking into a career in phlebotomy is a simple and staightforward process. In most cases, you will fill out an application for acceptance in the program of your choice. If you are applying for programs at local community colleges, the first requirement is acceptance in the college of your choice.

Costs of training in these programs vary, but the majority of these courses of study can be completed for less than $1,200. The average tuition rates for phlebotomy training programs is about $1,000. Many of these programs offer grants, scholarships and financial aid that will defray the cost of the tuition.
As part of the program, you may be required to complete a clinical component that includes on the job training.

Phlebotomists are expected to complete ongoing education courses to maintain their certification.

Online Programs

There are some courses, such as anatomy, physiology and medical terminology that may be completed online. For the most part, however, your training will take place in class. Because of the hands on nature of phlebotomy, the majority of your training will include practicing blood draws on test subjects.

Salary and Job Prospects

The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the median wage for phlebotomists as $29,730. The highest earners will make more than $42,600 annually. The area in which you live, your level of experience and demand in your area will determine your specific salary range.

Phlebotomists are in high demand in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Find the right training program and start your career today.

If you want to be a limited technician, you must complete 20 hours of classroom training and 25 skin punctures under supervision. To become a phlebotomy technician I, you must complete 40 hours in a classroom and the same in a clinical externship, during which you’ll do 10 supervised skin punctures and 50 supervised venipunctures.

To become a phlebotomy technician II, you must be a certified technician I. You must also have had five years with at least 1040 hours of clinic experience and a written letter stating you have completed 20 arterial punctures.

Application and Costs

The cost you will pay for your program depends on which one you enter.

The Pima Community College, for example, offers a phlebotomy course. You take the Accuplacer exam and depending on your score, you could be accepted. The passing scores are on the school’s website. Once accepted, weekday programs are available as are evening and weekend classes.

The Pima Medical Institute also offers phlebotomy training. You learn to process and collect specimen, how to do first aid and CPR, and more. This is a great program to educate yourself to have a job while you’re training for a more labor-intensive job.

Online Programs

Phlebotomy Services offers an online program for those who want to get their feet wet or who cannot do a full class. The tuition is $899, which is equivalent to some programs and less expensive than others. A $50 late fee is added when you register less than three weeks before your course is to begin.

This course consists of three days. The first two days are completed online. The third day is held at an in person location, which changes from month to month. Generally, they are held in three different states at a time, and in one particular city. The states change from month to month as well.

Maintaining and Renewing Your License

To renew your license you must pay a renewal fee. In addition, you must have completed three hours of continuing education classes each year. Since you renew your license every two years, this comes to six hours before you renew your license.

To maintain your license, you must complete three hours of classes each year. In addition, you must be reviewed annually for competency. Your certification must be easily visible where you work. If you work in an ambulance, you can show your identification card on your person in an easily visible place.

You must also be reviewed monthly for a supervised skin puncture. However, this only applies to limited phlebotomy technicians and phlebotomy technician Is. Phlebotomy technician IIs are not reviewed for skin punctures.

Salary and Jobs

In Arizona, the average salary for a phlebotomist is $30,443 a year. Entry level jobs average $24,581 a year. The highest paying jobs in Arizona can average $36,898 a year. Location, job, and employer all make large contributions to how much is in your salary each year.

Your job will mostly consist of drawing, labeling, and correctly storing blood specimens for a doctor or hospital. You may also run blood drives, in which case you will be asked to keep extensive records of patient histories.

Either way, you should have neat handwriting since your work will be used by others to make everything work correctly.

You need to have a Bachelor’s degree to be qualified for this school.

  • Master of Public Health

Requirements and Eligibility

53To be a phlebotomist you must do two things: have a high school diploma (or GED as that is also accepted in many programs) and fulfill the requirements for the type of phlebotomist you want to be: a limited phlebotomy technician, a phlebotomy technician I, or a phlebotomy technician II.

Each one builds on the previous. At the start, the only requirements are that you complete 20 hours in a classroom to learn the theory, and do 25 skin punctures under supervision. These are the limited technician requirements.

Building on that to become a phlebotomy technician I, you must do 40 hours of clinical experience (and during that time, do skin punctures and venipunctures under supervision – 10 and 50 respectively) and 40 hours in the classroom, learning the theories. However, you do not need to be a limited technician to apply for to be a technician I.

You do have to be a technician I before you can apply to be a technician II. In addition, you must have had 1040 hours of experience in a clinic in the past five years and have a written letter stating you have done 20 successful arterial punctures.

Application and Costs

Where you go will determine the application process and the costs.

The tuition cost at the Bay Area Medical Academy, for instance, is $2,750. Included in this is your textbook, but not licensing and exam fees. This course will give you 40 hours in an externship and the choice between a two, three, or four week course in the classroom. You’ll learn about anatomy, the circulatory system, and much more. After the classroom portion and passing the national exam, you are permitted to work the externship.

The San Jose Safety Training Seminars also offers phlebotomy classes. However, you have to email them for locations and information on costs and other things.

Online Programs

While there is an online class provided via Phlebotomy Services, it is not a substitute for a traditional program in California. It is a good way to get your feet wet, however. It costs $899, and the first two days are online. Once that work is completed, you can attend a third day that is held in person at a specific location each month. The locations change from state to state each month.

Maintaining and Renewing Your License

Renewing your license takes a little work. You must attend at least six hours of education classes every two years (more on that in a moment) and pay a renewal fee.

Maintaining your license is harder. You must attend three hours of classes each year (IE the six hours mentioned above), make sure your certification is displayed in a visible place, and be annually reviewed on your competency. If you are a limited technician or technician I, each month you are reviewed on a supervised skin puncture.

Salary and Jobs

In California, the average salary of a phlebotomist is $38,101 a year. An entry level job can earn $30,691 a year, and the highest average in the state is $46,090. Location is a large part of why the numbers are so high. It’s more expensive to live in California. What kind of job you do and who employs you are other major factors.

As a phlebotomist, you will be drawing, labeling, and storing blood for doctors or for hospitals or blood drives. If the latter is the case, you will also be required to keep a detailed record of the donors medical histories.

Today, WCU offers health care degrees that will help prepare you and educate you on the current trends and issues within the health industry.

Programs:

  • Master of Health Administration
  • MPH - Master of Public Health (Online)
Locations:  Los Angeles

Requirements & Eligibility

52No matter what training program you choose, you must have a high school diploma to become certified in California or take the national certification exams. Other requirements are school or employer specific. Many employers will require national certification. In general, however, you will need to meet the following requirements:
~ Be 18 or older at the time the training program begins.
~ Have a valid CPR card.
~ Have proof of immunizations, especially hepatitis B.
~ Pass a drug screen and background check.
~ Meet other institution-specific requirements, such as prerequisites for math, English, science or anatomy and physiology.
Unlike most states, California has three levels of phlebotomy technician: Limited Phlebotomy Technician (LPT), Phlebotomy Technician I (PTI) and Phlebotomy Technician II (PTII). An LPT needs less training but can only perform skin punctures. A PTI must have a minimum of 40 hours each theory and clinical training. PTIs can perform skin punctures and venipunctures. To become a PTII, you must be certified as a PTI and have at least 1,040 hours of experience. PTIIs can do all the tasks of the other two categories and also perform arterial punctures. Although all programs must meet basic requirements to be accredited, the length of the program and the content may vary by institution.

Application Process & Costs

Each training program has its own application requirements, process and fees. For example, the De Anza College program offers a PTI certificate for about 12 months of training (part-time) and a cost of approximately $3,500 to $3,700. Santa Rosa Junior College has an eight- to 10-week program for a cost of approximately $46 per unit for California residents. Non-residents pay $176 per unit.

Online Programs

Although online programs may be available for the didactic portion of phlebotomy training, a clinical practicum under the supervision of a qualified instructor is required. Some programs may offer more clinical training than others, which is a benefit as it allows you to practice the technical skills required for this occupation.

Maintaining Certification/License & Renewal

California certifies phlebotomy technicians but does not license them For all intents and purposes, the certification is a license to practice. You must pass an examination to become certified, and the national certification exam cannot be used to meet this requirement. Certification is good for two years. You can renew your certification by completing approved continuing education credits or taking the exam again.

Salary & Job Prospects

California offers excellent wages for phlebotomy technicians; it is one of the highest-paying states in the nation. Job demand is also high; the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports job growth for phlebotomists is projected to be almost three times as fast as the average for all occupations through 2022. Metropolitan areas like San Francisco typically have higher than average wages and plentiful job opportunities due to the wealth of university medical centers, hospitals, clinics and clinical laboratories. The average hourly wage in California was $18.16 in May of 2014, according to the BLS. In the San Francisco Bay area itself, the average hourly was was $17.67 and the average annual salary ranged from $21,710 to $53,860. In nearby San Jose and Vallejo, hourly wages were $20.59 and $21.24, respectively.

You must have a high school diploma or a GED to begin training for any of the three spots named above. Also to become certified for any of the positions, you must pass the national exam.

To become a certified limited technician, you must have 20 hours in a classroom via an accredited program – which will be discussed later. You must also do at least 25 supervised skin punctures. These can be done on training arms or on patients since you will be supervised.

If you want to be a certified phlebotomy technician one, you must have 40 hours of classroom training, as well as 40 hours of clinical experience.

To be a certified phlebotomy technician two, you must be a certified technician one and have had at least 1040 hours of clinical experience in the past five years. You must also do 20 supervised arterial punctures, and have a written letter stating that you have done them. Only a licensed practitioner can give you this letter.

Application and Costs

Where you go will determine how much you spend on your phlebotomy training.

At the Family Health Services Training Center, you have to request a quote. However, if you have had experience of at least six months, you will have to complete 40 hours of classroom work. After that, you can be certified. You also have the option of taking basic and advanced courses online if you have the experience.

If you have no experience, you will do 50 hours of applied instruction and 80 hours of clinical experience in addition to the 40 hours in the classroom. These classes will prepare you for the national exam, no matter which route you end up going.

The San Diego Mesa College also offers a phlebotomy course. You will complete a minimum of 50 to 100 venipunctures, 25 capillary punctures, and observe two arterial punctures. The minimums you complete must be done successfully. Upon completion, you get a certificate that says you have performed well, but you must take the national exam before becoming a fully licensed practitioner.

You will pay $26 if you live in California. The price is higher for those who do not live in the state. However, this does not include books, supplies, the exam fees, a background check, or the uniforms that you will need.

The San Diego County Regional Occupational Program also has a phlebotomy program. This is completely free of tuition, but you must pay for classroom and book fees. A win win for someone on a budget. This is a good option for simply prepping for an entry level job in the general healthcare industry while you save up for a real phlebotomy class.

Online Programs

As mentioned earlier, the basic and advanced courses can be taken online at the Family Health Services Training Center if you have had six months of experience prior to taking the classes.

If you have not had six months of experience, one option is Phlebotomy Services. However, this class does not count as a way to prep you for the national exam in California. It’s $899, and consists of two online days and one in person day.

Maintaining and Renewing Your License

To maintain your license, you must be reviewed annually for competency. You will also have to show your certification or license in a prominent place in your work space or person. You must also take three hours of continued education classes each year. If you are a phlebotomy technician I or limited technician, you are reviewed monthly on supervised skin punctures.

To renew your license, you must do two things. The first is make sure you are taking the three hours of classes each year for a total of six every two years. You must also pay a fee.

Salary and Jobs

The median salary in California is $38,101 a year. Entry level jobs pay about $30,691 and higher paying jobs can pay up to $46,090.

As a phlebotomist, your main job is drawing, labeling, and storing blood correctly.

Requirements & Eligibility

49California has three categories of phlebotomy technicians: Limited Phlebotomy Technician (LPT), Phlebotomy Technician I (PTI) and Phlebotomy Technician II (PTII). Training requirements and scope of practice differ in each category. All require a high school diploma or GED, and you must pass a written exam. You cannot become a PTII unless you are already a PTI. The LPT program includes 20 hours of theory; you must show proof of 25 supervised skin punctures (LPTs can only perform skin punctures). PTIs must complete 40 hours of theory and 40 hours of practical training, including proof of 10 supervised skin punctures and 50 venipunctures. PTIIs must first obtain a PTI and have at least 1,040 hours of experience to apply for certification. A PTII can perform skin punctures, venipunctures and arterial punctures. Training courses in Sacramento are widely available from community colleges, technical/vocational schools and private institutions. All training programs must be approved by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). The CDPH maintains a list of approved schools on its website.

Application Process & Costs

Each training institution has its own eligibility requirements and application process. Costs vary widely. At Sierra College, for example, the cost is $2,795. At Abrams College, tuition is $2,772 for the basic course. Abrams also offers an advanced course for $975. Some — Kaiser Permanente is one example — have application fees as well as tuition. Expect to spend at least $2,000 on your training. Contact the institution in which you are interested for details. It would be wise to contact several and compare what they offer in terms of classroom training, clinical rotations and internships. Although each accredited program must meet minimum requirements, some will offer you much more for the same amount of money.

Online Programs

The theory portion of the training may be available online, depending on the institution. However, hands-on clinical training under the supervision of a qualified instructor is required. It’s important not to short-cut this portion of the training. Technical skill and competence are necessary to be a good phlebotomist.

Maintaining Certification/License & Renewal

California certifies phlebotomists; it is similar to being licensed. You must pass an examination and submit documentation of your high school diploma or GED, your phlebotomy training and your clinical experience. The state does not require national certification; national certification cannot be substituted for the state certificate. Employers may prefer or require national certification, however. You must renew your California certification every two years by completing continuing education or retaking the exam. There is a fee for recertification.

Salary & Job Prospects

Sacramento is the medical hub for many outlying areas in California. It has several large university medical centers, as well as other hospitals, healthcare facilities, clinics and clinical laboratories. Job prospects should be excellent, and the BLS says demand for phlebotomists is expected to grow at a rate of 27 percent through 2022 nationwide. The average hourly salary for phlebotomists in Sacramento was $19.00 as of May 2014. Annual salaries were also much higher than in other locations across the nation, ranging from $27,629 to $56,810. Wages in the rest of the state are typically higher than the national average of $15.33 an hour.
