alabama-1Requirements and Eligibility

You must have at least a Diploma that you had obtained from High School or GED to enroll in a phlebotomy institution. However, some institutions may admit applicants with basic education from community colleges, vocational institution or technical institution. The Alabama Department of Health and Social Services regulatory board does not require phlebotomists to be certified to work in Alabama. This should not deter you from becoming a certified phlebotomist as most employers consider technicians who had passed a phlebotomy exam and certified tests.

Application Process and Costs

You must be at least 18 years of age to apply for phlebotomy studies in Alabama. The admission application process is straightforward and varies by institution. Typically, you will need to submit your application form, a copy GED or high school transcripts and identity documentation. Some institutions support applications made online while others prefer paper-based application. You may also be required to submit application fees, which also vary by institutions. Before you begin your application, make sure the Phlebotomy program that you intend to study is accredited by the NAACLS. The average cost of studying Phlebotomy Technician program is around $500; normally about four weeks of training.

Online Programs

There are several universities and colleges in Alabama State that offer online phlebotomy classes. You will need to find a course that is accredited by a recognized organization. The primary aim of these online classes is to help students and full-time employees to learn skills of drawing blood. Most popular online lecturers teach about venipuncture and dermal puncture. You can also learn other topics such as physiology, anatomy and details of the circulatory system. Online programs don’t offer laboratory portions of phlebotomy course. You will, therefore, need to get practical skills from brick and mortar Phlebotomy institutions.

Maintaining Certification

As stated earlier, the Alabama Department of Public Health does not require phlebotomist professionals to be certified to work in any state. However, employers prefer technicians who have obtained certifications from recognized organizations. Examples of recognized organizations that certify phlebotomists include the American Medical Technologists, American Society for Clinical Pathology, Phlebotomy Technician (PBT, ASCP), American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians and the National Phlebotomy Association. Depending on the organization you choose, you will need to keep your license valid all the time. To reduce the hustle of getting licensed after graduation, choose a phlebotomy institution that gives you practical experience.
