Requirements and Eligibility

13Colorado does not require a license to work as a phlebotomist. However the state does have a regulating agency, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, Division of Professions and Occupations, that recommends prospective employees complete a certification program as most employers require certification. At least one hundred hours of clinical training are also strongly encouraged.

Eligibility may have slight variation from one education facility to another. Across the board requirements are students must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. Other requirements may include drug testing, criminal background check and immunization records.

Application Process and Costs

Denver has numerous institutions offering educational opportunities, such as the Phlebotomy Learning Center of Colorado, Pima Medical Institute Denver Campus and Stillwater College. Program costs range from less than $1,000 to associate degree programs costing thousands of dollars.

Most programs offer both daytime and evening courses that start throughout the year. The amount of credit hours and hands-on training varies significantly. One of the most important considerations in selecting a program, is whether is has national accreditation to ensure high quality training. Several Denver institutions also offer programs that combine coursework with EKG or medical assistant training.

Following completion of a phlebotomy program, you should take a national exam offered by an accredited agency. Some training programs include the cost of the exam in program expenses, otherwise is costs around $100 to $125. This certification is critical to make you more competitive in the job market. National certification agencies include the American Credentialing Agency (ACA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Society or Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Online Programs

Phlebotomy classes can be taken online; however, even online programs require clinical experience. You will have to work with online programs to locate clinics or laboratories in your area to obtain necessary clinical hours. Examples of online programs include Rassmussen College and Tulsa Community College.

Maintaining Certification/Licensing Renewal

National certifications are valid for two years. Many Denver training facilities offer free continuing education to help you maintain certification. Some of the coursework may be available online. If your certification lapses, you may be required to take refresher training and to retake the national exam prior to renewal.
