Phlebotomists are certified medical technicians whose skills are in demand throughout health care fields. This medical expertise is expected to increase as diseases expand nationally and internationally. Health industries, whether solid or fluctuating, provide stable employment opportunities in hospitals, medical laboratories, health departments, nursing homes, medical clinics, mobile blood stations, physician offices and foreign missionary clinics. Students learn how to draw blood for medical testing, research, blood transfusions, and donations. Phlebotomy training programs typically are completed within three to 12 months. After successfully completing several courses and exams, students become nationally certified through a variety of accredited agencies including the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the American Medical Technologists (AMT) and the National Phlebotomy Continuing Education Organization (NPCE). Employment is available throughout the United States and foreign countries. Studies show graduates earn an average $25,177 to $30,740 a year. Graduates who are certified in this field earn higher wages than those who are not certified. Certification allows individuals to more easily find employment in locations worldwide.

Phlebotomy Training Courses

Students learn practical classwork in preparation for classroom courses and online clinical settings. Adult and newborn mannequins are utilized to teach correct procedures for drawing blood. Instructors present practical applications for skin puncture sites, puncture techniques and post-puncture care. The courses include basic instruction on laboratory safety, recordkeeping, patient identification, accurate blood labeling, proper needle and waste disposal, blood collection equipment and correct procedures when drawing blood. Training is offered through associate degree programs that offer advancement to other medical-related fields of study. Online students can complete clinical requirements on campus in a structured environment with simulator mannequins or mannequin venipuncture arms. In addition to clinical training, students learn how to work with physicians, nurses, lab technicians and other healthcare staff in a calm and professional manner that benefits patient care. Classroom coursework and computer clinical training have evolved with 3-D graphics or virtual mannequins that students can access through a touch screen device. Stretching the patient’s skin, needle insertion and vein anchoring are virtual training exercises that are completed through practice case studies. Patient care extends beyond drawing blood. Phlebotomists are skilled at responding to patients who experience adverse reactions to blood procedures. Students learn safety procedures and how to wear medical clothing that protects them from potential life-threatening infections. Software used in virtual phlebotomy tracks the students’ steps with each procedure to ensure accuracy and training excellence. Needle sticks are not popular among patients. However, a courteous, well-trained phlebotomist can make the patient’s appointment seamless, reduce pain and present a positive, comforting experience to individuals in need of medical care.
