Working in the medical field requires a special type of person. In addition to formal training, you must be comfortable around blood, have a reassuring demeanor around patients, and have great attention to detail. It is up to you to have all information correct for the labs.

The first step towards working as a Phlebotomist is obtaining your training. You must complete course work as well as have a defined number of actual blood draws. Basic requirements for any of the educational institutions mentioned here are:

Must be 18 years of age
Hold a high school diploma
CPR training (required by some schools)

Application Process & Costs

Pennsylvania offers many different paths for starting your Phlebotomist career. Community Colleges, Technical schools, private facilities and On-line course are all available. Some courses can be completed in one year, while others may take several years and result in an Associate or Bachelors degree. More important than the type of facility you attend is if your facility is accredited. If not accredited, you money and time may be wasted.

Training is typically split into two segments. Classroom training is provided by any of the facilities mentioned. In addition, a hands-on clinical segment is needed. This hands-on training may or may not be part of your facility’s curriculum (and tuition).

The cost of training depends on several factors:

Community Colleges may be $600 to $2,600 but a college which includes Phlebotomy inside another medical degree could be over$30,000. On-line courses are relatively inexpensive to attend, however you will have the added expense of your clinical training.

In addition to tuition there is also expenses for books, uniforms, lab fees, and training kits.

Online Programs

It is possible to complete your requirements while taking on-line courses. Several schools offer full curiculums with coursework such as Medical Terminology, Venous Anatomy, Medical Safety, etc. During the on-line program, it is required that the student periodically travel to a clinical facility to complete their hands-on training. Each college will have its own requirement for number of blood draws.

Maintaining Certification/License & Renewal

In Pennsylvania, it is not required to obtain your certification in order to work as a Phlebotomist. However, it is a requirement of many employers and it is a good idea to obtain it.

When you become certified in Pennsylvania, it is through a nationally accredited organization. This means you are automatically licensed to work in any state. Your certificate is valid for two years before it must be renewed.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a growth in clinical jobs requiring Phlebotomist training to be 27% by the year 2022. This is one of the few areas which are expecting this type of increase.

The median salary for an experienced Phlebotomist was $30,150 in 2013. More experience and more training can greatly increase this salary.
