rhode island-39Requirements & Eligibility

To become licensed as a phlebotomist, you will first need to start taking classes toward a certificate in phlebotomy. To begin a phlebotomy education program, you will need to submit your high school transcripts or GED. You will take several placement tests, including reading comprehension and health sciences readiness. Once you have completed all the courses, you will sit for a national test. Passing this examination means that you are able to apply for a phlebotomy license to practice in Rhode Island. Rhode Island’s exam also includes a clinical evaluation and component that all licensure candidates must pass. In order to earn a phlebotomy license, you will need to file an application, submit your exam results and undergo a background and drug test.

Application Process & Costs

Phlebotomy colleges offer training programs that usually last for two semesters. To apply for one of these programs, you will need to send in the documentation that your college requires. This usually includes letters of recommendation, your transcripts and any employment history. Application and tuition fees vary. The national certification exam costs $175 to the National Phlebotomy Association. Additional fees must be paid to the State of Rhode Island. These fees vary based upon whether you have a new license, are renewing it in time or are doing a late renewal. You may be able to apply for financial aid in order to complete your phlebotomy studies.

Online Programs

Online programs in phlebotomy allow you to complete the coursework on your own schedule. These online courses may include subjects such as writing, medical insurance coding, quality assurance and laboratory information systems. Once you have completed the internet-based portion of your phlebotomy courses, then you will do some clinical work to gain hands-on experience with your future career. Online programs may help you to complete your phlebotomy degree faster so that you can get out in the field and start making a difference to others.

Maintaining Certification/License & Renewal

In order to maintain your certification and license to practice phlebotomy in Rhode Island, you must renew your licensing documents on an annual basis. Your national licensure must also be renewed every year. You will not have to repeat the licensing exam or application unless your license lapses by more than 90 days. No additional training or classes are needed for your license renewal, although many phlebotomists do take occasional continuing education classes to keep updated on the latest developments in laboratory technology and medical coding for the procedures that they perform.

Salary & Job Prospects

According to the federal government, job prospects for licensed phlebotomists are expected to increase by 27 percent from 2012 through 2022, and even faster in Rhode Island due to the state’s growing population as well as increases in diseases like diabetes. This increase in demand for phlebotomists is also due to aging of the population and a greater consumer demand for healthcare services. In 2012, the median pay for licensed phlebotomists was $14.29 per hour, or $29,730 per year. Phlebotomists can expect to see wage increases faster than the average for all occupations due to the high demand for these licensed and experienced healthcare professionals.
